DHRUBA

DHRUBA began in 2001 when a group of young social workers in southwest Bangladesh came together in response to the exclusion experienced by Dalit and other disadvantaged communities. They formed a non-government, non-political and non-religious organization grounded in sustainable development and empowerment.

A guiding star

The name DHRUBA is associated with a guiding star in Bangla. It reflects the organization’s commitment to knowledge, dignity and collective action. DHRUBA received formal recognition in 2004 and registered with Bangladesh’s NGO Affairs Bureau in 2012.

How DHRUBA works

DHRUBA follows a participatory, group-based approach. Communities identify priorities, discuss challenges, take action, monitor progress and decide what should happen next. The organization works as a facilitator, with particular attention to women, girls, children and socially excluded Dalit communities in rural and urban areas.

Its documented areas of work include education, human rights awareness, health awareness, women and children’s empowerment, local resource use and self-reliance.
